New York CNN —The National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday ruled that Home Depot violated the law by firing an employee after he refused to remove “BLM” (which stand for “Black Lives Matter”) messaging from his work apron. The NLRB ruled that Morales’ refusal to remove the messaging was a “protected concerted activity” to protest the racial injustice that took place at the store from August 2020 to February 2021. The Board’s reasoning flips rulings from lower NLRB judges on BLM messaging on employee uniforms in Home Depot and Whole Foods. A change in messagingThe decision by the Labor Board overturned a ruling by an NLRB administrative law judge in 2022. A decision by an administrative law judge can be appealed to the Board, made up of five members.

CNN —Faculty members at California State University (CSU), the largest public university system in America, have ended their one-day strike after reaching a tentative agreement with management. The union represents 29,000 members including professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches, across the 23 campuses of Cal State. Our members have won a Tentative Agreement … that includes raising the floor for our most vulnerable faculty, safer workplaces & expanded parental leave,” it said. “The agreement enables the CSU to fairly compensate its valued, world-class faculty while protecting the university system’s long-term financial sustainability,” she added. Thousands of Cal State faculty began striking on Monday, the first day of spring semester classes for much for the university system’s 450,000 student.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers (UAW) says its members have voted to reject a tentative agreement with Mack Trucks and will go on strike Monday. Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks, was quoted by Reuters as saying he was “surprised and disappointed” that the union had chosen to strike. CNN has reached out to Mack Trucks for comment. Mack Trucks is one of the major US makers of heavy duty and medium duty trucks, with deliveries of 27,000 in 2022 and 16,000 for the first half of 2023. But technically, this was a strike to protest the school district’s labor practices, not over the state of the contract negotiations. Most of those short strikes started with both strikers and management knowing the length of the strike at the start. Los Angeles school workers and supporters rally in Los Angeles State Historic Park on the last day of a three-day strike this past week. Sometimes the union waging the strike doesn’t have the option, at least not at that time, to have an open-ended strike. Workers on strike sometimes receive strike benefits but they’re not eligible for unemployment benefits from their state.
